Bill Sigler
Bill is LexArx’s Managing Partner and a first-chair patent litigator. Over the course of his two decade-plus career, Bill has compiled an impressive array of patent infringement case jury trial victories, including four defense jury verdicts in the Eastern District of Texas.
He has also won summary judgment and other dispositive motions in district courts including the District of Delaware, Eastern District of Texas, Western District of Texas, and Northern District of California. These victories have included Rule 12 decisions invalidating five patents across three cases on behalf of a Fortune Five company, a summary judgment of noninfringement in the Eastern District of Texas on behalf of a national retailer, and multiple summary judgment wins in declaratory judgment actions.
Bill is well-versed in effective pre-litigation and early litigation analysis and responsive actions. In responding to demand letters, Bill brings forth his experience in litigating notice and willfulness before juries and through appeal. He’s also successfully litigated declaratory judgment actions and dozens of reexaminations and IPRs before the United States Patent & Trademark Office. And Bill has led teams that have achieved zero dollar dismissals of litigations on behalf of cloud computing companies, retailers, and other clients in the Eastern District of Texas, Delaware, and other courts.
Appellate success is another hallmark of Bill's career. He's argued before the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, and achieved victories in over a dozen appeals he’s litigated before that court. These wins have included protecting jury verdicts, reversing jury verdicts, protecting Rule 12 judgments, protecting and reversing summary judgments, and defending Patent Office and Patent Board decisions.
As a result of his trial and appellate successes, Patexia has ranked Bill one of the top ten patent defense lawyers in the United States, Managing IP magazine IP World Handbook and Survey has named Bill an "IP Star," and Super Lawyers has selected him as a Washington, D.C. "Super Lawyer."
Active in the intellectual property bar, as well, Bill previously served in the American Bar Association's Section of Litigation as co-chair of the Intellectual Property Committee's Patents Subcommittee.
Bill is also a published author, and the media has asked him to comment on intellectual property litigation issues, with publications such as The American Lawyer, Reuters, Bloomberg, Law360, and ABA Litigation News all having quoted him.
Before forming LexArx, Bill co-founded and helped lead Fisch Sigler LLP, a boutique patent litigation firm. Prior to that, Bill litigated for nearly a decade at two large international law firms.
